October is the perfect time to bring a little pumpkin fun into your classroom! If you’re looking for math activities that are hands-on, engaging, and easy to prep, these pumpkin math crafts and centers are a great fit for your preschool, kindergarten, or first grade students.
These activities combine math practice with creativity and fine motor skills, keeping your little learners excited and focused while reinforcing important early math concepts.
Pumpkin Grin Math Craft
There’s something about crafts that makes math stick for young learners, and this pumpkin activity is always a favorite. Students use mini marshmallows or candy corn to give their pumpkins silly smiles (grins).
What I like most about this craft is how versatile it is as far as differentiation. All the students can make the same craft, but work on different math skills.
The same craft can help students practice:
✔ Counting and writing totals
✔ Comparing the number of teeth in the top vs. bottom row (more or less)
✔ Using greater than, less than, or equal symbols when comparing the teeth
✔ Adding the two rows together
I like to give students two different ways to do this craft, depending on time and their skill level:
Print-and-Go Pumpkin Template – The pumpkin is already assembled. Students simply add their “teeth,” color it if they’d like, and fill in the math template. This option is quick, perfect for morning tubs or sub plans, and keeps the focus mainly on the math skills.
Cut-and-Paste Pumpkin Craft – Students cut out the pumpkin, stem, eyes, and nose and glue the pieces together before adding the candy teeth. This builds extra fine motor practice while still reinforcing math concepts. It also makes an adorable display for a fall bulletin board!
Thumbkin Pumpkin Crafts
This one is super cute and personalized with students’ thumbprints! Students dip their thumbs in orange paint and press their thumbs onto paper to create tiny pumpkin “thumbkins.”
We have done two versions, depending on students’ counting abilities:
- Thumbkins on a Gate – fits smaller numbers, great for early learners.
- Thumbkins in the Patch – accommodates larger numbers for students who are ready to count more (higher).
After creating their thumbprints and allowing the paint to dry, students count how many pumpkins they made and record the number. It’s a simple way to practice counting and number writing, while creating a keepsake-worthy seasonal craft.
Pumpkin Counting Center
Pumpkin mats make a fun, interactive math center. Students pick a number card, place it on their mat, and then add the correct number of candy “teeth” to the pumpkin’s mouth. Since they have already done a similar craft, they are familiar with how to complete the center.
- This center is easy to differentiate – use cards for numbers to 10 or numbers to 20
- Optional recording pages (exit tickets) give students extra practice tracing and writing numbers while giving you a quick way to assess their work.
This center is low-prep, reusable, and perfect for math stations or morning tubs.
Pumpkin Comparing Numbers Math Activity
Once your students are confident counting, they’re ready to compare!
In this activity, students choose two pumpkin cards, count the teeth, and decide which one has more or less, OR if the amounts are greater than, less than, or equal.
I use two differentiated center mats based on student readiness:
- More or Less Mat – perfect for beginners who are just starting to compare amounts.
- Greater Than, Less Than, Equal To Mat – a next step for students ready to use math symbols.
The pumpkin cards are also differentiated: numbered stem cards (for quick recognition) and non-numbered stem cards (students count the pumpkin teeth to compare).
I like to add symbol cards (> , < , =) for hands-on practice, and optional recording pages give you a quick way to assess student understanding.
Teaching Tip
I like to use the Pumpkin Grin Math Crafts for whole-group fun (it’s always a hit!), the cute Thumbkin Pumpkin Crafts during small groups, and then rotate the Counting Mats and Comparing Numbers activities into my math centers.
