As the school year winds down and summer break is just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to combine your students’ creativity with a little writing reflection. One of my favorite end-of-year activities is a watermelon-themed bulletin board that’s both adorable and meaningful—and it’s always a hit with students and families!
This craft and writing combo gives your students the chance to share what they’re looking forward to this summer or what they’ve enjoyed if you’re doing it at the beginning of the school year or wrapping up summer school. Best of all, it’s simple enough for little learners to complete with just a few materials.
How It Works: “This Summer I…” Writing Prompt
Start by giving each student a slice of watermelon made from construction paper with the prompt “This summer I…”. For preschool students, you can write their responses for them or use a dictated sentence structure. Students can also add a drawing to match.
The open-ended prompt works great for:
- End-of-year reflections and summer plans
- Back-to-school memories from the summer
- Summer camp or summer school wrap-ups
It’s a fun way to celebrate student voice while sneaking in one last writing activity!
Add a Sweet Craft for a Meaningful Display
Here’s where it gets really fun and adorable—students create themselves taking a big bite out of a juicy slice of watermelon! You can offer simple face templates or let them draw their own. Add a pair of sunglasses, a summer hat, and you’ve got a classroom full of sweet summer smiles!
Students glue on their hat and sunglasses, then draw their hair, mouth, and nose. Little hands love assembling these pieces, and every project turns out delightfully unique. Once the writing and crafts are finished, display them on your bulletin board or classroom door for a cheerful sendoff into summer.

Depending on your timing and classroom needs, try one of these bulletin board titles:
- “We’re Ready to Take a Bite Out of Summer” – perfect for end-of-year celebrations
- “We Had a ‘One in a Melon’ Summer” – great for back-to-school, summer camp, or wrapping up summer school
Both add a playful, punny twist to your display and highlight the fun your students have had together.
