Celebrating Grandparents’ Day in the classroom is a great way to honor the important role grandparents play in children’s lives. Whether you invite them to spend some time at your school or read and discuss books about grandparents, it’s an opportunity for students to learn about the past, highlight different cultures or traditions, build classroom community, and create connections between generations.
One of the best ways to celebrate Grandparents’ Day is with a creative craft that children can make and gift to their grandparents. Since the holiday falls in September, I like to make fall-themed apple crafts.
These crafts are perfect for the beginning of the school year because they are easy to prep, fun to create, not too complicated, and can be personalized to make them extra special.
“Love You to the Core” Grandparents’ Day Apple Crafts
Students love creating these special apples for their grandparents! I love how simple yet adorable they are to create! They are perfect for assessing and practicing students’ fine motor skills.
Students cut out apples, leaves, and stems from construction paper. Glue them together along with their photos to create these adorable gifts for their grandparents.
The message can be put on the apple or the leaf.
For students who do not have grandparents, the “Happy Grandparents’ Day” message can be kept off of the apple so they can give the gift to anyone they choose.

“Love You to the Core” Apple Core Grandparents’ Day Craft
To better match the personalized message “Love you to the core”, I also like to use these apple core patterns.
They do not require as much gluing and can be cut out or left as they are, making them perfect for preschoolers or students who struggle with scissors.
Children color the apple, glue their photos in the center (or draw a picture of themselves), and sign their names.
I like to have one that has “Happy Grandparents’ Day” on the leaf and one that does not so students without grandparents can still participate.

Apple Basket Thumbprint or Fingerprint Grandparents’ Day Craft
This is a cute craft to use as a craft station if you have invited grandparents into your classroom for the day. Students work alongside their grandparents to make these personalized apple crafts. It’s a wonderful bonding experience and allows them to create a special keepsake together.
Students use their thumbs or fingers to create the apples for the basket. They can dip their thumbs or fingers in paint OR the grandparents can use a paintbrush to paint their thumbs or fingers.
Special messages and drawings can also be added for some extra special personalization.

Grandparents’ Day is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories and foster connections between generations. With these simple and meaningful apple crafts, you can provide students with an activity that is both fun and heartfelt.
