St. Patrick’s Day and Easter Grass Activity

Grass Leprechaun Hair and Easter Basket Filler

In these activities students experience planting and caring for real grass.  They learn about how things grow with a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day and Easter fun!

St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hair

Materials needed:

topsoil
grass seed
styrofoam cups (white)
glue
crayons
leprechaun face pattern (optional)

Give each student a white styrofoam cup.  Either have them draw a leprechaun face on the cup or have them glue a leprechaun face onto their cup (patterns below).

Allow students to fill their cups with topsoil until it is about 1/2 inch from the top. Sprinkle grass seed on the soil generously.  Sprinkle a little more dirt on top of the seed.

Water.

Set them near a window and watch the leprechaun grow green hair!  Don’t forget to water daily if needed.  Once the grass grows really long the students can give their leprechaun a “haircut”.

Easter Grass

Instead of using fake Easter grass for your students’ baskets allow them to grow real grass instead.

Materials Needed:

1/2 pint or pint milk cartons, rinsed
topsoil
grass seed
white construction paper
rabbit ears pattern
crayons

Cut the tops off the milk cartons leaving the bottom third.  Glue white construction paper around the carton to hide the label.

Give each child a milk carton, rabbit ears pattern, and crayons.  Have them decorate their milk carton to resemble a rabbit (see illustration below).

Have students fill their milk cartons with topsoil until it is about 1/2 inch from the top. Sprinkle grass seed on the soil generously.  Sprinkle a small amount of topsoil over the seed.

Water.

Place on or near a windowsill and watch the “Easter” grass grow.  Don’t forget to water daily if needed.

Place wrapped candy or eggs in the baskets if desired.
